Irrigation - Please note - All subdivisions with Homeowner's Associations have private irrigation systems and are not maintained by Public Works crews.  These watering schedules apply only to those citizens on the city-maintained system.

Q.  Why is my irrigation water off on some Mondays?

A.  Sometimes Public Works employees drain the system to make repairs.  Usually, though, you're water is off because the Public Works Department flushes the city system on Mondays to keep the system clean.

Q.  What are my watering days?

A.  Even # addresses water on Tuesdays, Thursdays & Saturdays.  Odd # addresses water on Wednesdays, Fridays & Sundays.

Sanitary Sewer

Q.  How do I set up an account or pay my sewer bill?

A.  The City Clerk's office can help you with billing/account questions.  You can pay your bill or set up a new account at the Clerk's office in the Fruita Civic Center, 325 E. Aspen Ave., between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Monday-Friday (non-holidays).  Please note: for 2006, the monthly residential sewer charge will be $14.00.

Q.  Who do I call if my sewer line is plugged?

A.  Call (970) 858-9558 to report a problem.  The Public Works Department will check the sewer main to let you know if the problem is in the city's system or between your house and the main line.  For any problems between your house and the city's main line, you must call a private plumber to perform whatever testing or work needs to be done to fix the problem.

Streets/Sidewalks

Q.  I recently bought a portable basketball hoop for my child; can I place it on the sidewalk or street in front of my home?

A.  The City does not object to a portable hoop on the sidewalk while being used, but it must be removed from the sidewalk or street when not being used.  For your child's safety, it would be best if they kept the hoop on your property and did not play in the street.

Q.  I have an RV (or trailer); can I park it on the street in front of my home?

A.  You can park an RV or trailer in front of your home, but you cannot "store" it in the street.  For this purpose storage is anything over forty-eight (48) hours.  So, if you wish to park your vehicle or trailer for an extended period, you need to place it on your property, at least twenty feet from the sidewalk, or within an approved vehicle storage facility.

Q.  This fall I placed my leaves in the street for the city to remove, but the street sweeper just went around them.  Doesn't the city pick up the leaves in the fall?

A.  No.  The city does not currently have the resources to remove our residents' leaves, so do not place them in the street.  If you put leaves in a container, the trash collector will remove them.

Domestic Water - Please note: the City of Fruita's drinking water is supplied by Ute Water.  To report a problem or ask a question, call Ute Water directly at (970) 242-7491.

Weed Control

Q.  Who is responsible for maintaining the area between the sidewalk and curb in front of my home?

A.  Residents are required to maintain the area adjacent to his or her property to the curb.  Any weeds or brush must be cut and removed from these areas.  If using herbicide, the dead vegetation must be removed.

Q.  I live on a road with no curb and the city doesn't seem to cut all the weeds between the pavement and my yard.  Why doesn't the city cut all the weeds along my road?

A.  The city is responsible for maintaining an area ten feet wide along the pavement and the adjacent property owner/tenant is responsible for any remaining area up to their property line.  Also, the city will avoid cutting and/or spraying herbicide too close to private fences or property to avoid damage, leaving those areas for the resident to maintain.

Q.  My neighbor allows weeds to grow tall in their back yard; what can I do about it?

A.  Call the Code Enforcement Officer's office at 858-0763 to report a violation.

Alley Maintenance

Q.  Is the city responsible for maintaining the weeds in the alleys?

A.  No.  Actually, each resident is responsible for the alley adjacent to their property.  Weeds are to be kept cut (or sprayed) and must be removed along the adjacent alley out to the centerline of such alley.

Q.  I have trees growing near the alley; will the city cut the portions which overhang the alley?

A.  You are responsible for keeping your trees pruned to a height of fourteen (14) feet over the alley.  If you do not, the city is authorized to prune the trees and bill the owner for the cost.

Snow Removal

Q.  I know I must remove the snow from the sidewalk in front of my home after a storm, but my property also backs onto another street behind my rear fence.  Am I responsible for clearing this sidewalk as well?

A.  Yes.  The current code requires a resident to remove the snow from all sidewalks adjacent to their property, even the sidewalk behind their home and rear fence.
